Tollerton Parish Council is making good progress with its twin aims to buy the Methodist Church and St Peter’s church centre, to secure these sites for the future and offer new facilities for the village.
Following the decision by the local Methodist Church to end worship in the church building on Stanstead Avenue and put it up for sale, we’re pleased to be able to confirm that an offer from the Parish Council to buy the building for the community has been recommended for approval by the Church. We hope that this will be accepted in December (subject to contract).
In addition, the Parish Council has also ben in discussion with the Southwell Church Diocese and it has also been agreed – subject to contract – to sell the currently disused church centre and adjacent woods and paddock to the Parish Council.
St Peter’s Parochial Church Council has expressed its support for the transfer of the site to the Parish Council, with Ruth Hartley, Church Warden at St Peter’s and Secretary of the PCC, commending on their behalf: “The site is owned by the Diocese and people at St Peter’s are pleased the Diocese and the Parish Council have been able to reach an agreement over the Church Centre building and the woods and paddock.
“The site has been a great amenity for generations of Tollerton families over many years and it is very good news that it will be retained for the benefit of the village for many years to come.”
These two opportunities represent a huge opportunity to transform the facilities available to local residents within the village as part of the Your Tollerton Project.
This news builds on Tollerton Parish Council’s and Tollerton Flying Club’s successful purchase and refurbishment of the Air Hostess pub. This means that two of the most important and prominent buildings in Tollerton village centre and a further location in the heart of the old village will be in the control of the community, protected from developers and able to play their part in a vibrant village life.
The Parish Council is aiming to buy both buildings and land on roughly the same timetable, subject to the conveyancing process. What happens after the purchases go through is flexible but the Parish Council is minded to prioritise improvements to the Methodist Church initially and seek to rebuild the Church Centre at a later date. This would allow for fundraising and also to work closely with key users of the venue including the Cub, Scout and Rainbow groups.
This exciting news still has some way to go before the Parish Council will receive the keys so we’re keen in the meantime to talk to existing users and to hear from residents on the possible future use of the two sites.
