Tollerton Parish Council is making good progress with its twin aims to buy the Methodist Church and St Peter’s church centre, and wants to hear from residents on exciting plans for the future of both sites

Following the decision by the local Methodist Church to end worship in the church building on Stanstead Avenue and put it up for sale, we’re pleased to be able to confirm that an offer from the Parish Council to buy the building for the community has been recommended for approval by the Church.  We hope that this will shortly be formally accepted.

In addition, the Parish Council has also been in negotiation with the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and it has also been agreed – subject to contract – to sell to the Parish Council the currently disused church centre and adjacent woods and paddock at St Peters in the old village.

These two opportunities represent a huge opportunity to transform the facilities available to local residents within the village.

Protect and enhance

Parish Council has been working up plans and ideas for both of these sites and held a launch event for residents at the Methodist Church on Thursday 15 January 2026.

The vision is for the Methodist Church site to become a community hub for the village centre.  This would be in line with the Parish plan objective to “Protect and enhance community facilities and village life” and also in line with the aim in the Tollerton Neighbourhood Plan to “Enhance the village centre”.  This would mean plans to extend the existing structure to improve toilets and provide new community café space.  There would be a remodelled entrance for pop up / display space and smaller meeting / work spaces for hire.  It is hoped to install insulated pitch roofing in keeping with the pub.  Finally, plans are to extend the car park and create new landscaping alongside retention of green space around the building.

For the St Peters site, the vision is that this would be a village hall that provides a large and small venue.  This would be in line with the Parish plan objective to “Protect and enhance community facilities and village life” and also in line with the aim in the Tollerton Neighbourhood Plan to ensure “Protection for Green space and woodland”.  This would mean plans to demolish the existing centre, reclaiming materials where possible.  It would then be possible to widen existing access by removing undergrowth and shrubs, whilst retaining the mature trees.  There could then be an option to remove the scout hut to create single building to meet resident needs for a larger hall with dividers to allow for smaller group use. The existing woodland and green space would all be retained, with the possibility of a pedestrian access from Tollerton Lane.

These possibilities align with the feedback from residents obtained shortly after the pandemic where residents told us there were a range of facilities that were not available in the village, predominantly requiring a mixture of venue size and type. These included: Larger venue for public events, parties, indoor bouncy castles etc; smaller meeting rooms for local groups, home working and business meetings; space for informal socialising, a hot drink and community activity; more/regular pop up traders which would require improved infrastructure.

This exciting news still has some way to go before the Parish Council will receive the keys so we’re keen in the meantime to talk to existing users and to hear from residents on the possible future use of the two sites.
